Dogs are social animals. Their well being
depends on a healthy amount of regular exercise
and interaction with humans and other dogs.
People are finding that day care teaches
their dog/s important social skills, helps
alleviate separation anxiety, and provides
exercise and mental stimulation most dogs
would not get left alone.
While many facilities crate or kennel dogs
throughout the day with only a few short
breaks for exercise and socialization, Dunk N Dogs Day Care program participants spend the
entire day in the play area and are given
breaks only as needed (for feeding, rest,
or as "time-outs.")
Dunk N Dogs is one of the few day care facilities throughout
the country that is owned and operated by
an accredited dog trainer, former professional
pet groomer, and behaviorist. This makes
Dunk N Dogs an excellent option for dogs with separation
anxiety, destructive tendencies, incontinence
issues or an abudance of energy.
What are the requirements for the Day Care
program? Dog/s must be at least 4 months old, spayed
or neutered (if over six months old) and
current on age-appropriate vaccinations.
Dog/s must be in good health, flea and tick
free, friendly to all dogs, and pass the
Evaluation process.
What is the Evaluation process? To be accepted at Day Care, all Enrollment
Forms must be completed and signed and all
vaccination records submitted. Then your
dog/s will be introduced to an unfamiliar
but friendly dog to see how well they interact.
If all goes well, your dog/s will be accepted
into the program.
All dogs must pass a behavior Evaluation in order to attend
Day Care. They must be non-aggressive nor
food nor toy protective. This Evaluation
is by appointment only and requires a non-refundable
fee payable at the time of the appointment.
You must have had your dog living with you
in your home for at least 30 days prior to
applying to day care. Dunk N Dogs reserves the right to refuse any dog/s at
any time for any reason.
What do dogs do at Day Care? They play with other dogs in our safe, secure,
temperature-controlled indoor play area,
supervised by Dunk N Dogs Staff. Some dogs may play more than others,
some will want more human attention, some
may just lounge around. But all dogs benefit
from having more space, less isolation, and
interaction with each other. Should your
dog/s require a structured break, private
cages are available, but caging is not part
of the regular Dunk N Dogs curriculum.
What equipment am I required to provide? A quick release collar with your phone number
either directly on the collar or a firmly
attached ID tag.
Will my dog/s get to eat at Day Care? We discourage meals since most dogs neither
want nor require a meal during day care --
there's just too much to do! However, we
will be happy to feed your dog/s in a private
cage with a treat or lunch you provide. A
confined rest period after eating is mandatory
to prevent stomach upset. Fresh water is
always available.
Should my dog/s eat prior to coming to Day
Care? It is best to eat no less than 1.5 hours
prior to coming to day care to prevent vomiting
or bloat which can be caused by playing too
quickly after eating. If your dog is not
used to eating in the morning, and is otherwise
healthy, a meal is generally not required.
We do ask that all dog/s go "potty"
immediately before coming to Dunk N Dogs. All dogs will get potty breaks throughout
the day as required.
Will my dog be able to rest or take a nap? Our play area includes comfy couches for
relaxing. Staff supervision includes making
sure all dogs are having a good time and
are not overwhelmed. Most dogs tend to play
in 10 to 15 minute bursts, then take a short
catnap for about the same amount of time.
Since they're all playing together, many
of the dogs will take the same opportunity
to rest. Should your dog/s require rest away
from the group, private cages are available
for this purpose.
Is this environment safe for small dogs? Size is more of a human issue than a dog
issue. Many small dogs love to run with the
big dogs and vice versa. We make every effort
during the Evaluation process to ensure that
only friendly, playful dogs are admitted
into the Day Care program. If the play gets
a little rough for a small or timid dog,
Dunk N Dogs Staff will step in to make sure no one is
being overwhelmed either physically or psychologically.
How do you know if a dog is going to be social? Dogs tell us whether or not they like other
dogs by exhibiting signs of friendliness,
fear, anxiety, or aggression. As with people,
not all dogs like all other dogs and it can
be a mystery why. Most dogs, however, will
not make an issue of it and, over time, such
differences disappear. Once your dog is acclimated
to the group, s/he will develop a place in
the "pack" and everything will
go more smoothly.
It seems like a zoo when I drop my dog off,
is it always like that? No. When we have visitors the dogs often
get very excited, but they actually settle
down quite a bit once the new dog is introduced
into the play area and our human visitors
either leave or are very quiet for a few
minutes.
What punishment methods do you use? Since Dunk N Dogs employs the positive reinforcement philosophy
of training, we prefer to use the term "correction."
Our goal is to guide dogs toward behaviors
humans consider desirable rather than punishing
them for mistakes. Normally, a loud voice
or a clap of the hands is enough to startle
any dog out of trouble and encourage them
to move on to something more appropriate.
If that isn't effective, we also employ "startle
cans" and squirt bottles. A "time
out" may be employed if a dog is a particular
disruption to his/her other playmates.
What methods do you use if a fight breaks
out? We monitor the dogs' behavior to try to avoid
incidents before they happen. However, we
are equipped with a water hose if the above
methods aren't successful. Most such incidents
end nearly as quickly as they begin and are
soon forgotten. Just because your dog had
an incident with another day care participant,
doesn't necessarily mean your dog is now
more at risk around that particular dog.
Very often dogs work out their issues once
and it never happens again. It is policy
to give all dogs involved in an incident
a "time out" in a private cage
to calm down.
What if my dog/s get sick or injured? Every effort will be made to contact you
immediately. That is why current contact
information is so important. In case of an
emergency, we will transport your dog/s to
a vet as soon as possible. The health and
safety of every pet and person is our main
priority. Keep in mind, however, that your
dog/s will acquire an occasional nip or scratch
from time to time, which is unavoidable during
normal dog play.
My dog has health issues, can he/she still
come? This depends on the health issues. Unfortunately,
there are certain illness that don't mix
well in a social environment. We cannot accept
Epileptic or Diabetic dogs -- if they have
a seizure, other dogs may attack them. Obviously,
we can't accept dogs with communicable diseases
or parasites. There are other health issues
such as allergies, ear infections, arthritis,
glaucoma, and cancer, that we are usually
able to accommodate.
Will someone be able to give my dog/s medicine? We can administer medication you provide
in pill, powder or liquid form for no additional
fee. We do not give any injected medications.
All medications must be in their original
container with dosages clearly marked.
Do I need to make a reservation? Space is limited, so reservations are required.
We suggest you make a reservation at least
24 hours in advance.
What if I can't keep my reservation? We ask that you call and let us know as
soon as possible. Our answering machine is
available 24/7.
How do I make a reservation for Day Care? You must call and speak to us personally. You can
leave us a message to return your call, but
your reservation will not be valid unless
you speak to someone at Dunk N Dogs directly.
What else do I need to know? After even a short time at Day Care, your
dog/s' muscles and paws may be temporarily
sensitive from playing. Try to limit water
consumption for the first 3 hours as dog/s
tend to over drink when they arrive home.
Can my dog/s have a bath while at Day Care? When setting up your Day Care appointment,
you can make an appointment with our Groomer
at the same time, depending on availability.
